The Endocannabinoid System is a biological system comprised of endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) and cannabinoid proteins that are expressed throughout the body, including the brain and peripheral nervous system.

The Endocannabinoid system is believed to be linked to regulating physiological and cognitive processes, as well as fertility, pregnancy, pre- and postnatal development, immune system activity, appetite, pain, mood and memory.

There are around 480 different compounds in the Cannabis Sativa plant, of which around 66 are termed "Cannabinoids".  Cannabinoids implement their effects by binding with cannabinoid receptors present on cell surfaces in the central nervous system.

The effects of cannabinoids differ depending on the area of the brain that is involved in binding these proteins with the endocannabinoid system. For example, effects on the Limbic system may supplement memory, cognition and psychomotor performance, whereas effects on the mesolimbic pathway may supplement reward and pleasure responses and pain perception.
